Knowledge of flag of United Kingdom

The Union Flag, popularly known as the Union Jack, is the national flag of the United Kingdom or UK. It is the British flag.

Our UK flags are produced in China so this flag will match others of the same size if you are flying several flags together. Fabric you can choose for your flag of United kingdom is poly spun poly, poly max, nylon. You can choose applique process, sewing process or printing process to make this flag too. The size of UK ranges from 12”x18” to 30’x60’

“It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given Parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that “the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag”.”

So – “…the jack flag had existed for over a hundred and fifty years before the jack staff…” If anything the jack-staff is named after the Union Jack – and not the other way around!

Historian David Starkey said in that Channel 4 tv programme that the Union Flag is called ‘Jack’ because it is named after James l of Great Britain (Jacobus , Latin for James), who introduced the flag following his accession to the throne.

History of the design

The design of the Union Jack dates back to the Act of Union 1801, which united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland (previously in personal union) to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The flag consists of the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England, which also represents Wales), edged in white, superimposed on the saltire of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), also edged in white, which are superimposed on the saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland). Wales is not represented in the Union Flag by Wales’s patron saint, Saint David, because the flag was designed whilst Wales was part of the Kingdom of England.

The flag proportions on land and the war flag used by the British Army have the proportions 3:5.[10] The flag’s height-to-length proportions at sea are 1:2

The earlier flag of Great Britain was established in 1606 by a proclamation of King James VI and I of Scotland and England. The new flag of the United Kingdom was officially created by an Order in Council of 1801, with its blazon reading as follows:

The Union Flag shall be azure, the Crosses saltire of Saint Andrew and Saint Patrick quarterly per saltire, counter-changed, argent and gules, the latter fimbriated of the second, surmounted by the Cross of Saint George of the third fimbriated as the saltire.

No official standardised colours were specified, although the Flag Institute defines the red and royal blue colours as Pantone 186 C and Pantone 280 C, respectively. The fabric for us to make flag of united kingdom is also this color.

Black Red Gold

The origins of black, red and gold cannot be identified with any degree of certainty. After the wars of liberation in 1815, the colours were attributed to the black uniforms with red piping and golden buttons worn by the Lützow Volunteer Corps, which had been involved in the fighting against Napoleon. The colours gained great popularity thanks to the gold-ornamented black-and-red flag of the Jena Original Student Fraternity, which counted Lützow veterans among its members.

However, the colours’ national symbolism was derived above all from the fact that the German public erroneously believed they were the colours of the old German Empire. At the Hambach Festival in 1832, many of the participants carried black-red-golden flags. The colours became a symbol of national unity and bourgeois freedom, and were almost omnipresent during the 1848/49 Revolution. In 1848, the Frankfurt Federal Diet and the German National Assembly declared black, red and gold to be the colours of the German Confederation and the new German Empire that was to be established.
