History of Massachusetts state flag
• The history of the Massachusetts state flag dates back to the early 17th century. The original flag of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, established in 1629, featured a white field with a green pine tree in the center. Above the pine tree was the motto "An Appeal to Heaven," which represented the colonists' belief in their rights to appeal to a higher power in their struggle for independence and self-governance.
• Later, during the American Revolution, Massachusetts formed its state navy, and a variation of the flag was adopted as their ensign. This version featured a white field with a green pine tree, along with a blue canton in the upper left corner, which displayed a white star.
• In 1915, the current version of the Massachusetts state flag was adopted by the General Court. It maintains the green pine tree on a white field, but now the blue canton in the upper left corner features the state coat of arms. The coat of arms depicts an Algonquian Native American holding a bow, with a star overhead representing Massachusetts as one of the original thirteen colonies. The shield on the coat of arms contains a blue background with a golden rod and a silver sword crossed, symbolizing peace and war, respectively.
• So, the Massachusetts state flag is a combination of elements from the original colonial flag and the ensign used during the American Revolution. It represents the state's history, culture, and struggle for independence.
